Tynemouth Priory (May 2001)

Tynemouth Priory and Castle

The priory was one of the richest in England, it has a presbytery 22 metres high. At the east end is the Percy Chantry with its interlaced rib vault design. It was built over a seventh century monastery and was the burial place of ancient Northumbrian kings.
The castle was constructed in the fourteenth century to defend the priory.
A cannon stands here in memory of the Tynemouth Volunteer Artillery who were the British Army's first volunteer gunners. Nearby is...

Admiral Lord Collingwood Monument

This was erected in 1845 and is one of three monuments in the country to the Admiral who was second in command at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Following Nelson's death, he went on to win the battle. Below the monument are the four guns from his ship Royal Sovereign. Apart from those on the Victory these are the only surviving guns of their kind.
