Stanley - County Durham

The town of Stanley is located high up, so wear something warm when you visit! It's situated between Chester Le Street and Consett The town has a fair selection of shops including an Asda. Also in the town centre behind Asda are the Lamplight theatre and the Louisa sports centre.

The bus station built in 2006 has many environmentally friendly features including grey water recycling and photovoltaic tiling, with a CCTV system for security.

Sadly the town suffered great losses on the 16th February 1909, at 3.45pm there was an explosion from underground, fifty seconds later there was a second much louder explosion, flames and smoke rose into the sky from Burns Pit. This was the worst Colliery disaster ever in the Northern coalfields, 168 men and boys lost their lives on that fateful day.
