Marks and Spencer was founded by Russian born Polish-Jewish immigrant, Michael Marks in Leeds when he borrowed 5 pounds from
Issac Dewhirst, a wholesaler. The original firm was a chain of penny bazaars, the first full size store was opened in 1894
at Stretford Road, Hulme, in Manchester.
Marks formed a partnership with Tom Spencer who at the time was a Dewhirst cashier. Dewhirst became a manufacturer
and went on to become a huge supplier to M&S. The company was further developed by Marks' son, Simon Marks joined by his friend, Israel Sieff.
Preferring to rely on its reputation the company resisted television advertising until the mid-1990s
