Mills in North East England

Heatherslaw Mill, Near Ford, Northumberland. A restored 19th century water mill used to produce stone ground flour from locally grown wheat.

 

Otterburn Mill, Otterburn, Northumberland. 18th century Otterburn Mill has historic machinery, artefacts, quality textiles, and craft products. Plus the famous Otterburn pram rug.

Path Head Water Mill, Blaydon-on-Tyne, Tyne & Wear. Path Head Water Mill is a restored, water powered joiners shop. Also picnic areas and wooded walk.

Jesmond Dene Mill, Newcastle. This ruined mill in Jesmond Dene Park is a mill with a replacement waterwheel.

Fulwell Windmill, Newcastle Road, Sunderland. Fully restored 19th century flour mill with regular milling demonstrations.

Heaton Windmill, Newcastle. The repaired stump of the windmill lies beside playing fields in Heaton Park.

Cleadon Windmill, South Tyneside. The stump of the windmill stands on Cleadon Hills and it is possible to walk up to it.


Armstrong Hydraulic Engine, Allenheads. A surviving hydraulic engine and Gilkes turbine.
Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland. There is a windmill tower at the north end of the castle.

 

Prudhoe Castle Mill, Northumberland. A ruined water mill stands beside Prudhoe Castle.


Whitburn Windmill, South Tyneside. A partially restored windmill.

 

The Old Fulling Mill, Durham City. Situated on the riverbank, below the west end of Durham Cathedral. It houses an archeology museum and cafe. It hasn't much mill machinery apart from a water pump.

The North of England Lead Mining Museum, Upper Weardale, County Durham. Killhope is a lead mining museum which was originally a 19th century lead mine and ore separation site. There is a 10 metre diameter, iron waterwheel which pumps water plus two smaller waterwheels on the surface. WARM, WATERPROOF CLOTHES AND SENSIBLE FOOTWEAR RECOMMENDED. FOR THE MINE WEAR WELLINGTONS OR BORROW WATERPROOF OVERSHOES.

The Home Farm at Beamish Museum has a gin gan (horse powered engine) which was used for threshing.
