Craster, Northumberland

Craster is on the coast of Northumberland, about 6 miles from Alnwick.

It's probably best known for its smokehouse and kippers.  Barrels of salt herring were exported to Germany and Russia. Fresh kippers were sent to Billingsgate Market.

The present harbour was constructed by local landowners in memory of Captain Craster who was killed on an expedition to Tibet in 1904.

Whinstone was exported from here until the quarry was closed down in 1939, it is now a nature reserve.

Nearby is Dunstanburgh Castle. The castle was built by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster. The work started in 1313. Also nearby is Howick Hall Gardens
