Craghead is a former colliery village, the colliery closed on Friday 11th April 1969. Until the 1840s and the development of mining, Craghead was sparsely populated and mainly agricultural.
The village is located in the district of Derwentside, about four miles west of Chester-le-Street, two miles from Stanley town centre. From Durham City it's seven miles north west.
A north east landmark, from miles around you can see 2 huge modern electricity producing windmills at Craghead on Windmill Hill.
The Craghead miner photos were taken at the crossroads at Craghead, the town of
Stanley
