River Wear at Chester Le Street (July 1996)
The Roman Fort at Chester Le Street was occupied from the second to the fourth century .
The present town evolved from this.
Hundreds of years after the Romans left, the body of Saint Cuthbert was brought to Chester Le Street from Lindisfarne.
They took refuge in the roman ruins and in 883 AD the parish church was founded.
Saint Cuthbert's body was later taken to Dunholme (Durham City) and buried in the new cathedral that was founded there.

(behind main street in town centre).
Adjoining the parish church is a small museum on two floors which gives an insight into how an
Ankerite lived in the middle ages.
They stayed within the walls for life and passed the time in prayer and contemplation. The museum features artefacts and
also the history of the church from when it was founded in 883 AD.
