Causey Arch is the oldest surviving railway bridge in the world. It was built
around 1725-1726. It is 24 metres (80 feet) high. The Tanfield railway crossed here to transport
coal to the River Tyne.
Tanfield Railway is the oldest existing railway in the world.
It was originally opened in 1725. The original wooden rails, with waggons pulled by horses, were
later replaced by metal rails and stationary steam winding engines. The railway is now a tourist
attraction. Steam locomotives run on the three mile track between Sunniside, Causey Arch and
East Tanfield.
Tanfield has Britain's oldest working engine shed which houses locomotives, carriages and a
vintage workshop.
The railway is run by enthusiasts, check before travelling!
