Catchgate, Stanley, County Durham,

Catchgate is a former coal mining village, located in the district of Derwentside. It's about 12 miles from Durham City

Catchgate was originally a drovers way with a gate across the road to catch toll dodgers who were travelling north. The 1858 first edition of the Ordnance Survey map shows Catch Gate on the turnpike road, the village at this time is shown as only a few buildings, including two public houses, the Smiths Arms and the Crown & Thistle.
Hobson's Buildings was built in 1860 for milling and baking and is one storey shorter than it was due to fire damage.
