Browney is a small, former colliery village about 4 miles from Durham City, it has become
amalgamated with Brandon and Langley Moor.
It was formerly home to the colliery and coke oven workers employed by Bell Brothers Limited.
The company started sinking the shaft at Browney colliery in 1871,
with coal being drawn in 1873
The colliery was purchased from Bell Brothers by Dorman Long in 1923
