Wallsend is a busy town in North East England. It's on the north side of the River Tyne,
a few miles from the east coast.
Hadrian's Wall crosses England for 73 miles from
Solway Firth to Wallsend.
The Roman fort at Wallsend is called Segedunum which means 'strong fort'. It features a reconstructed bath
house, hands-on museum, excavations and remains of the fort. A modern, 18 metre high viewing
tower overlooks the site.
Built in the AD 120s, Segedunum contained headquarters, a granary, barracks, workshops, stables
and a hospital.
In AD 410 the Romans left Britain and the area was used for farming.
In the 1780s a coal mine was opened next to the fort then in the mid nineteenth century
the remains of the Roman town were covered by a shipyard.
