Rothbury is an old market town, in the shelter of the Simonside Hills in the Coquet Valley.
The town has a pleasant tree lined main street. Nearby is a pleasant picnic
area close to the River Coquet. The town is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Not far from Rothbury is Cragside House.
Cragside is a Victorian mansion which was built by the first Lord Armstrong. It was the first
house in the world to be lit by hydro electricity! It had hot and cold running
water, central heating, fire alarms, telephones, a Turkish bath suite and a passenger lift.
The house is surrounded by spectacular gardens, including one of the largest rock gardens in Europe.
It is situated 30 miles north of Newcastle, 1 mile north of Rothbury. Off the A697 and B6341 (Rothbury-Alnwick road)
