Gateshead

Gateshead is a large town on the south side of the River Tyne. It is just across the river from Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Gateshead is probably best known for the Team Valley Trading Estate,
The Angel of the North and the Millenium Bridge.
Gateshead council has a great interest in developing Public Art.

The former Baltic Flour Mill, which was a 1950's grain warehouse is on the Gateshead Quays. It has been transformed into a centre for contemporary art.

The Angel of the North is a major landmark sculpture by Antony Gormley. The Angel symbolises the North East's regeneration and celebrates its engineering skills. Gateshead's Angel is 20 metres high and 52 metres wide. It is sited by the very busy A1 between the Washington-Birtley motorway services and the Team Valley.

On the night of 5th October 1854 Gateshead had a huge fire, it started at a factory in Pipewell Gate and spread to Bertrams warehouse next door. The warehouse contained amongst other things 1 ton of Naptha and 3,000 tons of brimstone. Balls of fire shot across the river and spread the fire to Newcastle Quayside. The explosions were heard as far away as Hexham and Hartlepool and by sailors 20 miles out at sea.
