Coal mining in North East England

Durham Miners Gala

The Durham Miners Gala or big meeting as it is also known was started in 1871. For pictures and information read the book "The Durham Miners Gala" published in July 2001 by local historian Michael Richardson.




As well as many other attractions Beamish open air museum has a colliery village. The village has pit cottages & gardens, Board School, Methodist Chapel, drift Mine, steam winder, pithead buildings, engine shed, powder house and chauldron Waggons.
Visitors can take the short guided walk into the mine. The path is a little uneven and headroom is low. Hard hats are provided.
