Bishop Auckland is a large market town, the seat of the Bishop of Durham since the 12th century. This busy town in South West Durham is the largest in the Wear Valley. It's set above the River Wear and has good views of the surrounding area.
The main street is good for a wander if you like shopping! Check for market times.
In the Market Place is the Town Hall, a French style grade 1 listed building.
A mile from the town, built on the Roman route of Dere Street is
Binchester (Morbium) Roman Fort.
At Escomb is the restored 7th Century Escomb Saxon Church.
Also nearby is Auckland Castle with it's Deer Park.
