Alnwick-Northumberland

Alnwick, pronounced "anick" is a market town in north northumberland.

Within the town, The White Swan Hotel is partly furnished with fittings from the Titanic's sister ship RMS Olympic. It features wood panelling from the first class Lounge
and part of the aft grand staircase.

In the window of the Olde Cross pub look for the dirty bottles. A Victorian landlord put them there then dropped dead! It's said that if anyone ever touches them then they'll die too. So no one has touched them since.....

Barter Books, in the town's former railway station, is a huge used book store.

ALNWICK FAIR - Usually runs mid summer for a week. The fair has parades and entertainment in the centre of the town. The townspeople dress up in colourful costumes covering a number of historical eras. During the week Pied Powder Courts are held 3 times a day. Wenches found guilty of crimes are dipped in the ducking pool!!!

Alnwick Castle is 33 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne and 80 miles south of Edinburgh.
It stands at the edge of the town of Alnwick, overlooking the river. Its beautiful views include landscapes by Northumbrian Capability Brown.

The castle has been home to the Percys, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland since 1309.
Around 1096 Yves de Vescy became baron of Alnwick and had the earliest parts of the castle built. The first restoration was by the 1st Lord Percy of Alnwick in the early 1300's.

Also recogniseable as a popular filming location. Including use by Blackadder, also the Castle was 'Hogwarts' in the first 2 Harry Potter movies. In 2007 it's the family home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland.
