Allendale - Northumberland

Allendale is a small village in the Northern Pennines about 10 miles South of Hexham. It is probably best known for its New Years Eve Tar Barrel Festival. Local men dress up in fancy dress and carry burning barrels of tar around the four corners of the village, finally they throw the barrels to light a bonfire in the market square.
